The socio-economic and political climate of Kolkata sometimes make young people from the town to seek better prospects elsewhere in India than ever before. But while young people are seeking the bright lights and the big cities, there are few things that everyone who has lived in Kolkata miss when they leave.
1. Adda aanondo!
People in Kolkata love to ‘adda‘; speak to their friends and family about politics, sport and swapping the latest gossip!
While the bigger cities move at a neck-breaking pace, the people in Kolkata like to take it slow and spend their days lazing around, taking a beautiful nap after a sumptuous ‘ilish chorchori‘ with baath.
3. The random evening walk for Phuchka or Kathi Roll.
4. Shopping at Esplanade!
No matter, how many shopping complexes they get into, the fun of shopping at Esplanade is incomparable for the people in Kolkata.
5. The local ‘Para‘ & the cricket matches.
Kolkata is also one of the last cities in India where extended families live side by side as one small community. Even though the housing societies are making para culture a thing of the past in most cities, the tradition is still going strong in Kolkata.
6. The aroma of a cup of tea in the bhaand (clay pot).
It has been said that the taste of tea is never as sweet than when it is served from the earthen cups of Kolkata.
7. Durga Puja & the LED lighting of Chandan Nagar!
No other place in India can compare to the unbelievable atmosphere in the town during the five days of Durga Puja when the whole of Kolkata comes together for the incredible festivities.
8. The yellow color ‘Taxis‘!
